Motor systems are
the single largest
electric end use in the country.
Motors
offer a tremendous opportunity for energy savings, between 62 to 104
billion kilowatt hours (kWh) annually, according to the Department of
Energy. Developing an effective energy efficiency program that targets
motors and related equipment, such as variable frequency drives, offers
tremendous potential for utilities to reduce overall energy usage and for
commercial, agricultural, and industrial customers to achieve lasting
savings.
This workshop provided participants from energy organizations
with:
Overview
and demonstrations of current motors and VFDs technologies including
definitions, guidelines, and examples
-
Introduction to the program planning
and deployment materials available from the federal government to implement a successful motors program including the Motor
Decisions
Matter website.
-
Strategies to integrate these
materials and to streamline the marketing, implementation, and tracking designs
for these programs.
-
Integrate “carbon
footprint” into overall program measurement and tracking.

Program Manager,
Nebraska Public Power District,
crfuehr@nppd.com
Cory leads his department of fourteen
energy efficiency experts in implementing energy efficiency measures
throughout NPPD’s service territory. In addition to providing programs
to NPPD’s 80 retail communities, Cory’s department supports NPPD’s 76
wholesale customers (rural public power districts, one cooperative and
municipalities) and ultimately helps customers optimize their use of
energy in the residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural
sectors.
Cory began his employment with NPPD in
1990 at the coal-fired generating Gerald Gentleman Station, worked as a
Contract Administrator and a District Supervisor prior to focusing on
energy efficiency in 1997. Cory was promoted to the department
supervisor position in 2000 in York, NE and became the Energy Efficiency
Program Manager in 2007. Cory has served as the team’s agricultural
efficiency expert for five years and began NPPD’s irrigation efficiency

Dan Slottke was involved with the first large horsepower single-phase
Written-Pole™
motor design which included the first beta-site testing and
installation of these motors. Over the ensuing years he was assigned
to manage large-part procurement and act as liaison with vendor
manufacturers to ensure budget guidelines and quality standards were met.
In 2003, Dan assumed the sales/marketing responsibilities. PPC
manufactures the Written-Pole motors in sizes of 15 to 100 HP. The
company's single-phase motor marketing focus keeps him traveling the
country demonstrating the single-phase motors onsite for the benefit of
electric utility providers and their customers. Dan's effort to set up a
distribution network nationwide is ongoing.
